Harry Redknapp has taken the blame for John Terry’s move to Aston Villa, with the Birmingham manager admitting he didn’t push hard enough for the defender.<\/p>\n

Terry was unveiled as a Villa player on Monday following the expiry of his contract with Premier League champions Chelsea.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Redknapp was interested in signing Terry, but the former England captain chose to snub an approach from Birmingham in favour of a move to their rivals Villa.<\/p>\n

Harry Redknapp said he was wary of Birmingham’s wage budget when pursuing John Terry<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And Redknapp feels his lack of conviction when pursuing Terry was the reason his side missed out on the 36-year-old’s signature.<\/p>\n

‘I probably take the blame myself,’ Redknapp\u00a0told talkSPORT. ‘I didn’t really chase after John.<\/p>\n

‘We made him a great offer but in the back of my mind I always had this thought about the budget and players’ wages.<\/p>\n

Terry said he was looking to gain experience from Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce after signing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Terry snubbed interest from Bournemouth, Swansea and Birmingham in favour of joining Villa<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

‘I thought: “Do I put all my eggs in one basket or do I bring in four or five players that might help improve the team?”<\/p>\n

‘So we made the offer and then I stood back and maybe Steve was a bit more active in trying to get John than I was.<\/p>\n

‘But he is a top player and he is a big signing for Villa for sure.’<\/p>\n

Terry also rejected interest from Premier League sides Bournemouth and Swansea, as well as from the MLS and China, before choosing to join Villa.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ravel Morrison is training with Birmingham as parent club Lazio look to offload the midfielder<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Redknapp took over as Birmingham manager in April and won two of the final three games of the season to preserve their Championship status – he was rewarded with a one-year contract the following month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Birmingham have made three signings so far with Craig Gardner making his loan from West Brom permanent, goalkeeper David Stockdale joining on a free transfer from Brighton and Barnsley defender Marc Roberts signing in a \u00a33.5million deal.<\/p>\n
