Sky Sports pundit David Provan claims he would be surprised to learn that Sunderland manager David Moyes allows anyone tackle talismanic striker Jermain Defoe in training, such is the striker’s\u00a0importance to the team.<\/p>\n

The recently recalled England striker was pivotal to the Black Cats’ survival last season and this season, if they are to have any hope of beating the drop, it will be down to Defoe’s strikes.<\/p>\n

Despite the lack of goals from the north east club, the 34-year-old has found the net 14 times this season,\u00a058% of Sunderland’s goals, and was on target for the Three Lions against Lithuania on Sunday in a routine 2-0 victory.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Sky Sports News\u2019 Premier League Daily, via the\u00a0Chronicle Live, Provan said: \u201cI\u2019ll be surprised if David Moyes allows anyone to tackle Jermain Defoe in training, such is his importance.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as he stays fit, Sunderland will live in hope, but he is starting to look isolated, and the clock is now ticking against them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he was to get injured, David Moyes would have to wave the white flag.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defoe’s recent form has prompted questions that he may be considered for the England squad for the 2018 World Cup.<\/p>\n

However, Gareth Southgate has remained adamant that playing Championship football would not be enough to warrant a place, meaning he will likely have to move this summer.<\/p>\n

Provan added: \u201cTo get back into the national team at 34 – I don\u2019t think he has any intention of playing Championship football.<\/p>\n

\u201cSunderland did well to hold on to him in the last window, but were they to go down, I don\u2019t see Jermain Defoe hanging around.\u201d<\/p>\n
