Sam Allardyce has offered his opinions on Gareth Southgate\u2019s latest England squad – revealing that he was\u00a0\u2018delighted\u2019 to see Jermain Defoe recalled but admitted disappointment\u00a0with Andros Townsend\u2019s snub.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s such a good professional in terms of how he\u2019s looked after himself over the years and he can still play at the highest level.<\/p>\n “There aren\u2019t many England players to choose from in the Premier League to start with. English players are becoming a rarity to select from. Harry Kane is injured and he thinks that Defoe will be the answer to fill in for Kane.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/i><\/p>\n “I considered Defoe when I was with England. He scored all the goals in this year in a struggling side he\u2019s in double figures already. If you want goals Jermain Defoe will get you goals. <\/p>\n “And he\u2019s fit enough to play. It doesn\u2019t matter about age. It\u2019s a bit like the old saying, if you\u2019re good enough you’re old enough. Well if you\u2019re still fit enough you\u2019re still good enough at 34.”<\/p>\n The shock Defoe call-up wasn\u2019t the biggest surprise for Big Sam as he was disappointed to hear that his player\u00a0Andros Townsend did not make the cut to play a friendly against Germany and a World Cup qualifier with Lithuania next week.<\/p>\n “I\u2019m disappointed Andros missed out because I think he\u2019s playing the best football he\u2019s played since he\u2019s been at Palace,” Allardyce said. <\/p>\n “Especially the special goal he scored against West Bromwich Albion showed he\u2019s getting back to the form the made him an England regular a few years ago.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n ??<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
