Manchester City are considering a move for Monaco full-back ?Benjamin Mendy, according to the ?Mirror.
Monaco’s full-backs have played a huge role in their Ligue 1 title challenge this season, with Mendy contributing five assists from left-back in 17 league appearances. Djibril Sidibe has also impressed on the right flank of Monaco’s defence, scoring twice and adding four assists.
City lack youth in their wide defensive areas, with Gael Clichy approaching 32-years of age and
Scouts from the Etihad have been keeping tabs on Mendy and manager Pep Guardiola will have the chance to monitor the 22-year-old closely when City take on Monaco in the Champions League during midweek.
Mendy only joined Monaco at the beginning of the season, but Guardiola remains keen on the France U21 international.
Defensive reinforcements are of grave importance for Guardiola and CIty. The club’s Premier League title bid has been let down by their poor defensive record this season, despite City sitting second behind leaders Chelsea.
City have conceded 29 league goals this season, with only Liverpool’s defensive record worse among the top six teams.
Kolarov has made 23 Premier League appearances for City this year while Clichy has featured less, making 14 appearances in the competition. The likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have remained unconvincing in central positions, but the signing of Mendy would strengthen City’s back line.
