Manchester City and Barcelona Eye Moves for Southampton Defender Cedric Soares

Manchester City and Barcelona are both interested in Southampton defender Cedric Soares, according to the Mirror.

Southampton have seen a number of important first-team stars leave the club for pastures new and are reportedly preparing themselves for bids for the right-back, who won Euro 2016 last summer with Portugal.

Sadio Mane left the south coast for Liverpool, while Victor Wanyama joined Spurs during the summer, and Jose Fonte also recently departed, joining West Ham in January.

The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne have also left the club in recent years, while the future of star man Virgil van Dijk is also the subject of intense transfer speculation.

Cedric joined the club in 2015 for less than £5m, but Southampton will not sell the 25-year-old for less than £20m after a few solid seasons from the former Sporting CP man.

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger has previously stated Van Dijk will not be leaving, but the club may decide to cash in on Cedric should the offer be good enough.

Barcelona have been unable to properly replace former full-back Dani Alves, who joined Serie A giants Juventus in 2016 after a successful stay at the Catalan club. Sergi Roberto has mainly figured on the right side of Barcelona’s defence, while Aleix Vidal and Rafinha are also capable of playing at the back.

City have had defensive issues this season and with both Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta in the twilight of their careers, Pep Guardiola could turn to Cedric as a more youthful alternative.
