Arsenal Legend Claims Wenger 'Missed a Trick' in Not Retaining Legends as Coaches

?Arsenal double-winning star Emmanuel Petit ?has claimed that Arsene Wenger has missed out by not retaining the services of key elder squad members, over the years.

The World Cup winner admitted surprise at the career paths of some ex-Gunners, after they hang up their boots.

Speaking to SFR Sport, as quoted in the ?Standard, Petit said: “You’re often surprised by the career choice of some players after they have stopped playing.”

The former Barcelona star mentioned a conversation with his Arsenal and France teammate Patrick Vieira as evidence of the worrying trend. Vieira left North London in 2005 and spent time as a Youth Development Executive at Manchester City, before taking the reigns at New York City FC.

“I spoke to [Vieira] a few months before he left for MLS, there were representatives of Manchester City there,” Petit said.

“And I said that I was very surprised that Manchester City would offer a player who is so closely identified with Arsenal a job at their youth academy, like [Mikel] Arteta with [Pep] Guardiola.”

The French midfielder went on to namecheck other big stars that, he feels could’ve been integrated into the Arsenal backroom set up.

“I think Arsenal have missed a trick there, because there are other emblematic players who have left: [Dennis] Bergkamp is at Ajax, Thierry [Henry] is with Belgium.”

However, it seems that one Petit is most aggrieved about his former club passing over is his ex-captain Vieira: “He was always a leader on the pitch, and has a personality that means he will impose himself and not let himself be pushed around,

“There was also his position on the pitch which helped. At Arsenal, he was an immense captain.”
