Toby Alderweireld was a notable absentee from Tottenham Hotspur’s matchday squad for the away clash at Southampton on Wednesday.
Spurs released a tweet shortly after the team sheets for the St. Mary’s tilt were announced, saying the Belgian centre-back missed out due to a virus. It comes just three-and-a-half weeks after the 27-year-old returned following 11 matches on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Eric Dier was drafted into the backline in Alderweireld’s stead on the south coast, with Vincent Janssen returning to the bench after being sidelined since Nov. 26 with an ankle injury, and Victor Wanyama picked to start at his former stomping ground.
Twenty-year-old midfielder Dele Alli, meanwhile, becomes the fourth youngest player to make 50 Premier League appearances for Tottenham after Aaron Lennon, Sol Campbell, and Nicky Barmby.
Southampton makes four changes from the team that won 3-1 at Bournemouth 10 days ago, with Claude Puel opting to start Jose Fonte, Steve Davis, Oriol Romeu, and James Ward-Prowse over Maya Yoshida, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harrison Reed, and the injured Jordy Clasie.
Southampton starting XI: Forster; Soares, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Davis, Romeu; Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Boufal; Rodriguez
Subs: Taylor; Yoshida, Long, Tadic, Martina, Reed, Hojbjerg
Tottenham starting XI: Lloris; Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose; Wanyama, Dembele; Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen; Kane
Subs: Vorm; Davies, Wimmer, Winks, Nkoudou, Son, Janssen
